Nausicaa - Dean

Well after a week out of action feeling anxious that I had made one post to the blog and I'm already nearly two weeks behind I finally got some time on Friday to paint again...hip hip hooray. Here's my Nausicaa - I saw it first when I was a kid and loved that glider and that big crusty flea thing...so I just had to get those in a pic. enjoy

Yu Baba (Spirited Away) - fast eddy

This was a hard one as the Ghibli films are so well done it's very hard to improve on them. I tried doing Yu Baba. Instead of simplifying i tried to make her look meaner and uglier. This was supposed to be a look of utter disdain but ended up somewhere else. It's a real task to achieve the right look sometimes.

Totoro - Drew

I did a few versions of Totoro throughout the week, but i really didnt like any of them, so i decided to just do something short and sketchy, and this is what came out...

I really like how Totoro is so monstrous but so lovable at the same time, and well.. the catbus..

Princess Mononoke: Poop Log - Andy

I'm not going to lie to you, Oh User of the Internets. This is, sadly, my second attempt at this topic. The first attempt was a little ambitious and I really couldn't get it to work properly. Instead of that garbage you get an image of a japanese anime character pooping on a log.

I like Princess Mononoke. Her character design is simple but cool and she's one tough character. Plus, her buddy is a giant wolf. I think the star of this piece though, for me, is the stump with it's woody knots and shrooms and foliage. That and the glow bugs.

Porco Rosso - Egor

For me Studio Ghibli is equal to: wide sprawling landscapes, lush green fields, snow capped mountain tops, sparkling crystal blue water. Unique (often strange) well developed characters. And of course colour. Really really gorgeous colour.
With that in mind, I decided to steer WELL CLEAR of any of that.
Porco Rosso is my favourite Studio Ghibli film. An Italian WW1 fighter pilot cursed to look like a pig, who chases air pirates. Action, Comedy, Tragedy whats not to love.

018 -Studio Ghibli

With 46% of the votes, the writings on the wall (or screen in this case).
I think the Polls a great idea. While we wont feature it every week, expect it to pop again soon enough.

For anyone wondering what Studio Ghibli is.... well you should really goggle it.
But in short its an animation studio established in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and is often described as the Disney of the East*.
Ill be honest I don't think this week will be an easy theme. But we will try.
Also Im pretty sure everyone will have their personal favourite so expect some variety.

Good luck and have a great weekend sketching.
