Iron Giant - Dean

Hey all, it has been a while. Last Friday I said to Andy, "hey Man, what's the topic going to be today - I'll have time to draw today!"...babonggg....a week as passed with no opportunity to draw but today was the day I got to it! I don't know where to begin or end about The Iron Giant....what a great movie...an underrated classic and I cry every time in that cataclysmic scene as soon as the Giant says "Superman"...oops almost a little teary thinking about it. B&W for me this week...may colour it at some stage - it's begging for it, but I'm done for the day :)

  1. Hey Dean, this is niiiice! Having the bird on the wire is a simple but elegant way of showing the scale of the Iron Giant, and at the same time I get a sense of how gentle he is.

  2. WOW! Dean this is really REALLY nice. Great lighting and texture. Would be interested to see it in colour just to see your working process. But love the Grey tones.

  3. Thanks Egor! I really like the almost morning light quality I got with this while keeping the foreground in shadow which I believe lent itself an intimacy that was appropriate in this scene. I don't always work in greyscale before colour but when I do I just apply colour through combinations of various blend modes in PS. Sometimes this is a very tedious process of trial and error and often it is easier to just hit the colour first and make fine adjustments to it, but sometimes greyscale helps to get the contrast and values right and value is so important to get right - good colour can't fix bad values as they say. In this particular case I just started drawing in grey and got carried away and before I knew it, a few hours later, I was at this point...and by then I had enough!
